This week, the “Love Your Brain Now” Bus Tour traveled under the “Epilepsy California” banner and made its way to our state capitol, Sacramento. With permits in hand, the tour team inflated the “Big Brain” exhibit on the south lawn of our State Capitol building on December 3rd. Legislative staff and other state employees stopped by, intrigued to see the “Big Brain” in front of the State Capitol building, and were interested to learn more. Almost two hundred people stopped by to walk through the exhibit and learn more about the importance of caring for the brain and seizure first aid. One of our Speak-Up/Speak-Out advocates, Sophia, and her family traveled for over an hour to visit the exhibit. Second-grader, Christopher Webb, and his family from Visalia joined Ann and Jim Kinkor and Laura Thrasher to walk the halls of the Capitol to greet new and returning legislators and distribute epilepsy packets and personally thank the legislators who voted to pass a bill into law that protects the rights of students with epilepsy (Senate Bill 161). Neva Hirschkorn and little Christopher Kurtz and his mother and sister joined other advocates and the tour team at 3:30 p.m. on the steps of the Capitol when Epilepsy California and the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles honored Senator Bob Huff for his leadership and role as author of SB161. All these moments and more made the Epilepsy California’s “Love Your Brain Now” tour stop in Sacramento very memorable and special.
Pictures say a thousand words, so I encourage you to take a few minutes to scroll through each photo to join us in reflecting on the progress that has been made in increasing awareness among our state policymakers and their staffers and to be inspired by the passion of advocates and supporters – like you reading this blog – who have made that possible.
